William Johnson senior, it is believed used an adopted surname. He was
born as William D'Arcy c 1816 in the Channel Islands. He married Jane
COPPIN who was born c. 1825 in Kent England reputedly into an
aristocratic family. Jane's family considered that she married below her
status. Presumably their disapproval waas so strong the the young couple
emigrated to south Austrlia c 1852 and adopted the name JOHNSON.
Prior to emigrating William had become a train driver and had the honour
to drive the train used by Queen Victoria.
William lived in Gray Street, Rosewater and other places nearby,
conducted business as a carter and was killed on 24th December 1877 when
run over by a horse drawn dray. Jane died 26th December 1894. they are
buried in Cheltenham cemetery Section A Pathway 4.
Jane nee Coppin born into Aristocratic family of Kent, England. Married
William Johnson has 3 sons and 1 Daughter Ida Jane Johnson who married
Capt Daniel Ferns Nelson
